how-cancer-spreads.jpg

Scientists have wondered in the past why drinkers suffer more than twice the usual rate of breast, liver and digestive system cancers. Researchers from he US and Israel think they now know the answer: tumors are more likely to spread after a bout of heavy drinking.

Gayle Page of Ohio State University in Columbus and her colleagues injected rats with tumor cells that try to migrate to the lungs, but found out that these are destroyed by the immune system’s natural killer cells. However, when the tumors were injected into rats given alcohol, they found that 40 times as many cancer cells lodged in the animal’s lungs.

The researchers said the effects of alcohol on natural killer cells have previously been underestimated, probably because the process of extracting the cells from the blood washes away the alcohol and gives the cells time to recover.

The researchers add, however, that the risk was temporary: if the injection of tumor cells were delayed by 24 hours after the rats were given alcohol, the tumors were  no more likely to lodge in the lungs than in rats who are sober.

They said the increased risk appeared when the rats’ blood contained more than 0.2 percent alcohol, or more than twice the United Kingdom (British) limit for driving. “You may drink if you feel like drinking but don’t get drunk.”

The rainy days are upon us. And here in the Philippines, that doesn’t necessarily mean constant drizzles as much as is does the coming and going of heavy rains interspersed with dry, humid days. As expected, the occasional flash floods come with such intermittent weather- and with it, horrendous traffic jams. So what’s a hapless motorist to do?

Roll with the punches, really. Life does go on, after all. Still, common sense dictates that one has to be extra careful during times like these. So here are a few rainy day driving tips that could use- not just to tide yourself through the wet weather, but also to even be able to cut down on necessary expenses.safety drive

  1. Keep your trips to minimum. Like we said, life does go on. But there are admittedly a few trips that are not really necessary – especially if they involve small errands that could be performed some other time. Keeping your trips to a minimum not only reduces the risk of you getting into an accident, it also helps you save on that ever precious commodity called fuel!
  2. Constantly check the traffic reports. Learning about traffic bottlenecks caused by flash floods beforehand can help you avoid the areas that might otherwise leave you stranded. Knowing truly is half the battle. And as with keeping one’s trips to a minimum, knowing where not to pass (and subsequently where to pass) can also help you save up on fuel.
  3. Keep to that center lane. If you really must make that trip on a rainy day, there are a number of things you ought to be aware of as well – one of them being the fact that when the road is wet, the center lane is undeniably the safest lane to drive in. This is so because the outer lanes tend to mishaps, not the least of which is aquaplaning, which can throw your car out of control. So stay safe and keep it front and center.
  4. Keep those headlights on. Keeping your headlights on not only gives you better visibility, it also helps other drivers see you better on particularly heavy rainy days. And the added safety you gain from accomplishing such a simple task as keeping your headlights on is simply invaluable.
  5. Keep your distance. Wet roads tend to increase a car’s stopping distance. Keeping your distance from the next car will give you more time to react according if the need arises. A good side tip to this would be to watch those brake lights in front of you closely.
  6. Slow down! Like we said, wet roads require a longer braking distance. So keeping your speed at a manageable level decreases the risk of you slamming into that car in front of you. It also greatly reduces the risk of aquaplaning, by the way. Besides, why hurry when being safe is the priority?
  7. Be wary of puddles of water. When you absolutely must wade through roads covered in water, be careful not to rush into it. Make sure that you leave enough breathing space for you to be able to back out of a puddle in case you figure out that it’s deeper than you thought. Again, we stress – it’s better safe than sorry.
  8. Change those wiper blades. Now although this piece of advice might have come a bit too late, it’s still very much sound. You’d be surprised how much your visibility improves with new wiper blades as old, brittle ones tend to obscure your vision with lines and dirt instead of help you see the road better.
  9. Check your tires. Checking your tires’ inflation is always a must -  be it on dry or wet roads. Having the correct psi rating not only saves your fuel, it also keeps you safe from unforeseen breakdowns. More than the inflation, however, during rainy days like these, it’s your tires’ tread patterns have less grip on the road. As such, they’re more prone to aquaplaning. If you must, change those tires. You can never be too careful.
  10. Make sure you have your jumper cables and tools. In the unfortunate event of a break down, you really have to be prepared. Having jumper cables and basic tools that can help you re-start your car in an emergency situation is always smart. Portable car starters are also big plus factors in times like these. They may be a bit costly, but having them around can be very convenient if the need arises.
  11. Keep tabs on your costs. With adversity comes opportunity. And while the rainy season might require you to spend a bit more just to be prepared for unforeseen incidents, it also gives you the chance to play it smart where other costs are concerned. Shifting to more affordable fuels, for example, is a consideration whose time might have come. The savings you could get will definitely count for much more if you consider your general piece of mind.

So it really is up to you whether you let the rainy days get you and your car down. At the end of the day, you are still empowered to rise above. So take these tips to heart and keep safe out on those wet roads.

UNWANTED HAIR Tips From tetzmemoreShaving, waxing, depilatory creams, tweezing – these are typical tools used by most women to remove unwanted hair. While these methods are readily available and seem practical, in the long run they can become expensive, inconvenient and tedious.

Compare a lifetime of constantly removing unwanted hair to an average of six to eight sessions to permanently remove them. This is now possible with LaserLight hair removal, which has become the norm for thousands of women since its introduction in 2000.

LaseLight uses an FDA-approved diode laser that emits pulses of light energy that are absorbed by the pigment or melanin of the hair follicle. A unique ChillTip hand piece cools on contact, protecting the skin while directing the laser energy to the hair follicle. This targets the hair root and disables it from growing new hair. Different body areas are treated such as the underarms, legs, bikini line and upper lip. More than one treatment is necessary because hair grows in different stages. While some may be in the active growth phase (anagen) during treatment, other hair may be in the regression (catagen) or resting (telogen) phases. Only hair that is actively growing may be treated by LaserLight. Eventually, the hair resting during the previous treatment will begin to grow and when there is sufficient growth, the client can come in again for the next treatment.

Clients will only feel a stinging sensation during the treatment and a topical anesthetic may also be used to further alleviate any discomfort. Averages of six to eight sessions are required to permanently remove all unwanted hair. Aside from hair removal, underarm skin also becomes smoother and lighter because there is no trauma from conventional hair-removal methods. That means no more chicken skin, dark underarms, rashes, ingrown hair and stubble.

Proper distance to Computerdry eyes by tetzmemoreDry eyes make reading computer screens and driving at night a challenge. Dry eye syndrome is perhaps one of the most common afflictions people go to the eye doctor for. The situation generally presents when there is a problem with the quality of tears that lubricate the eye naturally. There are a number of causes for the syndrome. One of the biggest reasons is normal aging. During the aging process, bodies produce less oil than they used to. When there’s an oil deficiency in the body, it can affect the tear film. Without the oil to seal in the water layer, the eye can become dry and irritated. Other causes include climate, smoke, eye strain and more. And tear production tends to slow with age, sometimes drastically; in fact, the irritation and light sensitivity of dry eye syndrome (DES) affects 3.4% of people in America alone suffer from the problem. But eating fatty fish helped keep eyes lubricated in a new Brigham and Women’s Hospital study of 32,470 women.

Compared with those who averaged less than one 4-ounce fish serving a week, those eating two to four weekly servings cut DES risk by 19%. Five to six servings lowered risk by a whopping 68%. Go for salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, and halibut.
